MAY 31, 2002 MARKED

THE NAMING OF THE ROBERT E. MELICAN MIDDLE SCHOOL.

The following information about Robert E. Melican was excerpted from the presentation by Shirley J. Lundberg, Member of the Northborough School Committee, to the Northborough School Committee members Tony Poteete, Joan Frank, Leslie Rutan and Jonathan Wood, in February, 2002 at which time the naming in Mr. Melican’s honor was unanimously approved.

Robert E. Melican has been a part of the Northborough School District since 1969, beginning as a Grade 6 teacher at the Marguerite E. Peaslee School.  In 1971, the year that the Northborough Middle School opened, he became a Math teacher at the Northborough Middle School, serving in that capacity for five years, until June of 1976.  At that time he split his duties between continuing to teach math at the Northborough Middle School as well as in an expanded role as an Administrative Assistant in the same school.

In 1984, Mr. Melican was made ‘Assistant to the Superintendent’, and in 1986 became the ‘Assistant Superintendent’ for the three Northborough and Southborough school districts.  In June of 1996 he was appointed as the Acting Superintendent of the three districts and on September 10, 1996, he was appointed Superintendent for the Northborough, Southborough and Northborough-Southborough School Districts.  In all, Mr. Melican has served these districts well for 33 years and counting.

Mr. Melican has represented the Districts, and education as a whole, in capacities reaching outside of our community also, providing networks and connections to us at very meaningful levels.  He has served as a member of the Worcester Democratic Ward Committee, the Secretary/Treasurer of the Worcester County Superintendents’ Association, President of the Board of Trustees for the Worcester Vocational School District, Vice-President and President of the Worcester County Superintendents’ Association, is currently on the Advisory Board for Education at Worcester State College, has served on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, and currently serves as the Vice-President of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents.

His current office of Vice-President at M.A.S.S. is progressive and he will be representing the interests of our school district further as President-Elect and then President of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents over the next two years.  He has an excellent working relationship with the personnel at all levels of the Department of Education, including the State Commissioner of Education.  He is a major liaison between the Massachusetts Association of School Committees and the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents. He is well respected throughout the state by his peers in education.  Mr. Melican has certainly extended himself well above and beyond the requirements of this job, throughout his tenure, for the betterment of education in the commonwealth, but specifically for the students of the Northborough, Southborough and Northborough-Southborough Regional School Districts.

The Northborough Middle School was opened in the 1971-1972 school year and as of May 31, 2002, which was the date of the dedication of the school as the ROBERT E. MELICAN MIDDLE SCHOOL, celebrated its 30th anniversary year as an integral part of the Northborough Public School.
